NOM    = Norma Oficial Mexicana = Official Mexican Standard
004    = the number of this NOM
CNA    = CNA = National Commission of Water
1996    = The year this NOM was published in the DOF

(Published in the Official Daily of the Federation Aug 8, 1997)

*Published in January 14, 2009 in the DOF.  The CNA = "Comisión Nacional de Agua" (National Water Commission is changed to CONAGUA = "Comité Consultivo Nacional de Normalización del Sector Agua", National Consultative Committee of Standardization of the Water Sector  - CNA is changed to CONAGUA in all the water standards.

0. Introduction

La  necesidad  de  obtener  agua  en  cantidades  económicamente  explotables ha originado la perforación de aproximadamente 140 000 pozos. En un futuro próximo muchos de estos pozos requerirán de mantenimiento y rehabilitación y, en otros casos, al terminar su vida útil, serán clausurados o simplemente abandonados.

 

The necessity of obtaining water in economically exploitable quantities has been the basis for the drilling of approximately 140,000 wells. In a near future many of these wells will require maintenance and rehabilitation and, in other cases, at the end of their useful life, will be closed or simply abandoned.
