FAQ: What are the
requirements to be President of Mexico?
Answer: The
Constitution of Mexico, in Article 82 establishes the
requirements for being President; they are as follows: (When
it says Mexican by birth, that does not mean he/she must be
born in Mexico. Anyone born outside of Mexico with at least
one parent that is a Mexican national, is considered a
Mexican citizen by birth, Art. 33)
I. Be a Mexican citizen by
birth, in full enjoyment of their rights, child of a Mexican
father or a Mexican Mother and have resided in the country
at least twenty years.
II. Have completed 35 years of age, at the time of the
election;
III. Have resided in the country for one year prior to the
day of the election. The absence from the country for up to
thirty days, does not interrupt residency.
IV. Not belong to any ecclesiastical state or be a minister
of any religion.
V. Not be in active service, in the case of the Army, for
six months before the day of the election.
VI. Not be Secretary or Under Secretary of State, Attorney
General of the Republic, governor of any State, or Head of
the Government of the Federal District, unless separated
from their position six months before the day of the
election; and
VII. Not fall under any of the reasons for ineligibility
established in Article 83.
