NEW HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARD TAKES EFFECT IN MAY 2007
NOM-030-STPS-2006 Preventive Services of Occupational Health and Safety – Organization and operations. effective May 19, 2007
This standard is effective May 19, 2007 and requires businesses to have plans and procedures in place for preventive medicine, emergency situations, and risk assessment.
If your company has a Health and Safety program certified by the STPS, you are considered to be in compliance with this standard.
In the last few months there have been some very important changes in Environmental Legislation.
1.
REGULATION OF THE
GENERAL LAW FOR THE PREVENTION AND INTEGRAL MANAGEMENT
OF WASTES -
(Published in the DOF Nov. 30, 2006 – Effective Dec. 30,
2006)
This new regulation which became effective on Dec. 30, 2006 includes a new designation of "WASTES REQUIRING SPECIAL HANDLING" AND "WASTE GENERATED FROM FINISHED PRODUCT DISPOSAL". For the first time foreign manufacturers and importers are required to prepare waste disposal plans for the eventual disposal of the products that they bring into Mexico.
This regulation cancelled the LGEEPA - Regulation for Hazardous wastes that previously was in effect.
2. The LGEEPA - La Ley General de Equilibrio Ecológico y Protección al Ambiente was reformed on Feb. 12, 2007 - Then new changes become effective 6 months after publication, and mostly have to do with official responsibility for oversight. This is part of the ongoing reform related to Wastes.
3. NOM-086-SEMARNAT-SENER-SCFI-2005, Specifications of combustible fossil fuels for environmental protection. This standard replaces NOM-086-SEMARNAT-1994 and is an update of the permissible limits of air contamination from fossil fuels. Virtually all of the air quality standards are under review or in Project.
